Valerie Joan Hurst was born April 26, 1930 in Provo Utah. She was grateful for the heritage of a lovely Welsh-born mother Lucy Martha Griffiths, and a brilliant father from the back hills of Kentucky, Herbert Northcott Hurst. Joan was the oldest of three sisters, born and raised in the beautiful Rocky Mountains. Joan lived in many states and places, but home was always Provo.

Her life was always full of bright and happy colors. Her home was full of her paintings and books she wrote. And more importantly, her family. She met her husband Arthur Day through a mutual friend and candy making experience. She waited for him while he served his mission, and they were married September 5th, 1952 in the Salt Lake Temple. Together, they had nine children: Sherri Joan (Dec. 1954), Kim Louise (Dec. 2003), Karen Ann (Byron Perry), Rhonda Jean (Tom Edwards), Tami Leilani (Lane Phillips) Herbert Arthur(Ginger), David Emmett (Kelli), Shawna Lyn and Wallace Eugene (Tiffany).

She loved her children, and dedicated her life to them. She laughed with them through the happy swim meets, Eagle Scout ceremonies, drill teams, parties, picnics, hunting, fishing and other adventures. And she was a rock to them through sicknesses, surgeries, literal (very wet) Tsunamis, actual hurricanes, adventures, tragedies, births and deaths. She became a young widow in 1970, when her youngest child was only 5 weeks old.

Her life and home always centered on the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Her scriptures were always nearby, and she lived by the principles she believed. Her favorite scripture was John 13:34-35, and she was a true disciple of Jesus Christ, who truly loved her fellow man, and served them as often as possible.

She married Reeves Brady in 1989, and spent 22 happy years together. Together they served a mission in the Los Angeles Temple Mission. They also served as Family History Missionaries, Service Missionaries, and in many other callings and capacities.

The Brady children were treated like her own, and loved by her dearly. James & Lynette, Nancy & Tom, Ron, Karl & Laurie and all their grandchildren were always welcome in her home. Carl & Linda Struthers, Marlene Blackett, and the entire family of her lifelong best friend, Gloria Nuttal Tarbet Neves, were unofficially adopted. We don't actually know the official count of how many call her grandma, or Aunt Joanie.

In her later years, her body slowed slightly, but her mind was as sharp as ever. She was always a joker and prankster, loved dressing up at Halloween, and always managed to get a birthday card for every child and grandchild without fail.

She is survived by 7 children, 22 grandchildren, and 14.8 great grandchildren. Her sister, Katie Dowler lives in Missouri and her husband Ralph Day of Provo.

She has so many waiting for her on the other side, that there must still be an ongoing party, which is how she would have wanted it. Those of us left on this side will always remember her smile, her hugs, her testimony and her love. We’ll remember her when we have picnics and parades, and everything else we do ¨fer fun.¨ Grandma Joan, to you we say Aloha au iā 'oe.
