Sharon Trego

August 16, 1938 — December 30, 2021

Springville, Utah

Sharon Lee Mills was born to Bill Byron and Dolores Louise Winn Mills on August 16, 1938, at the Florence Crittendon Hospital, Detroit Michigan. In early 1941, after her parents divorced, she lived with her maternal grandparents, Omer and Dorothy Sutton Winn.

In late 1943 her mother, Dolores found a position as a secretary at a boarding school in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, where their little family could be together again. Sharon and her brother Dennis lived at the school and their mother lived in the staff housing on the property. In 1945, Sharon’s mother, Dolores, remarried Walter Byers in January 1945 and together started their new family life in Franklin, Michigan. Sharon was legally adopted by Walter Byers in 1950.

Franklin Village was a rural community and a great place for Sharon to explore caves, haunted houses, and build forts in bushes and trees. She would often tell the story of playing hide and seek behind the blueberry bush on the corner and lots of fond memories of growing up in Franklin with her siblings Dennis, Janice, and Bethany, whom she adored.

When Sharon began Junior High in nearby Birmingham, she easily made many friends in high school and became a cheerleader as a junior and senior. She joined a social club and was involved in many activities at school.

In 1950, the family started attending a branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Sharon was baptized at age 16 in 1954. The following year, the family went to the St. George Temple to be sealed for time and all eternity.

Sharon started college at Brigham Young University in the fall of 1957.  She lived in the Heritage Halls for women and was involved in a sorority. As a freshman, Sharon was named Regional Princess of the Intercollegiate Knights. She met the Duke of the Intercollegiate Knights, Gerald Lavon Boyenger, and fell in love by spring. At BYU the following fall, Sharon and Gerald were engaged and then sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple March 18, 1959.

During their 23 years of marriage, they had five children who kept them very busy; Julie Winn 1960, Kristin Marie 1961, Cynthia Jean 1964, Steven Gregory 1965, and Scott Cameron 1969.

Sharon made most of her own and the children’s clothing with many special dresses and outfits constructed in the wee hours of the night to be ready next day for special events.  Memories of Mom’s hot homemade bread out of the oven were a special treat and one loaf was always reserved for hungry children arriving home from school. There were lots of puppies and kitties with a lizard or two running around with the kiddos.  Sharon taught the children to sing, dance, and play various instruments, as well as coaching the kids in track and field and other sports. The family went on lots of camping trips with highly organized meals and lots of treats around the campfire.  Mother was our very own Mary Poppins.

Sharon was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was always very involved in her ward, serving in many Church callings while the children were growing up. There are many prominent memories of Mom as roadshow director, choreographing dances, dad painting scenery in the backyard, dance festivals, and an abundance of youth camps and activities to get children to on time.  She shared her love of the gospel of Jesus Christ regularly with children, grandchildren and enjoyed bearing her testimony in the way she lived and guided her family.  She remained active in the church and attended the temple often with her children until her passing.

Later in life, Sharon met and married James Moreland Trego.  Together, they shared a love of traveling and making gourmet meals for friends, as well as serving in church callings and lots of play dates with the grandchildren.  For several years, they hosted the missionaries living in their home.  After 31 years of marriage, Sharon was widowed and went to live with her oldest daughter Julie.  There were many wonderful Mom adventures while being well cared for in Julie’s home until she passed away on December 30, 2021 at the age of 83.

Sharon is survived by her children Julie Winn Boyenger Stuart (Charles), Kristin Marie Boyenger Ward (Tracy), Cynthia Jean Boyenger (Shane Ellis), Steven Gregory Boyenger (Andrea), Scott Cameron Boyenger (Tracy); James’ children: Jo Trego, James “Jet” Trego; siblings Dennis Wendell Byers (Rosalee), Janice Wynne Bingham Byers, Bethany Lynne Byers, 18 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.  A formal service will be held at a later date.
