Patty Kiser

March 23, 1936 — August 18, 2021

Patty Chung Kiser, 85, of Orem, Utah, passed away at home with loved ones beside her Wednesday, August 18, 2021, at 6:16 in the morning. She was born Chang Duk (창득) to her mother Sun Il You (유선일)  in Hang Hae Do Sari Wan (항해도사리완), outside of Pyongyang in what is now North Korea, on March 26, 1936, but her birth was recorded as March 23rd, on which she has celebrated every year since. When Patty was a year old, her mother carried her to Seoul where she was adopted by Ki Young Chung (정기영), who raised her together with her mother. In March of 1955 in Seoul, Korea, Patty married Chung Tak Chun (전정탁). She later immigrated to Hawaii where she met and married David Mark Kiser on July 4, 1978.

As an only child, Patty was the center of her mother and father’s universe. They doted on her and supported her love of music, theater, dance, and drama. Coming through the Korean War, she was student body president in high school and went on to study political science at the prestigious Ewha (이화) Women’s University in Seoul, Korea, before marrying and then raising four sons. After immigrating to Hawaii, she worked hard as a single mom to care for the boys and was also blessed with a beautiful daughter. With the help of her mother and Dave, she was able to provide for the children. She considered raising them to be her greatest accomplishment and was fiercely proud of all her children and grandchildren. She adored her great grandchildren! Patty enjoyed Korean drama and music, knitting and other handicrafts, cooking, hiking, and world traveling. She freely gave advice and $50 bills to her children and grandchildren. At the age of 75, Patty became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and believed that families can be together forever.

Patty is survived by her four sons and a daughter: David (Young Sun) Chun of Federal Way, Washington; James (Mitzi) Chun of Honolulu, Hawaii; Ki (Beth) Chun of Olathe, Kansas; Scott (Andrea) Chun of Orem, Utah; and Patti Kiser (Ryan Troyer) of London, Ontario, Canada. Patty loved her 14 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren: Lani Chun, Michael (Mary) Chun (with Audrey, Olivia, and Ethan), Matthew Chun; Logan Chun, Lacy (Brandon) Csere, Lorin Chun (Joshua Nielsen), Leanne Chun, Levi Chun; Christopher Chun, Samuel (Tami) Chun (with Andilynn, Anthony, and one more baby boy on the way), Alexander Chun, Daniela Chun, Dominik Chun; Evan Troyer. She was preceded in death by her husbands and parents.
