Luzon Glines

July 4, 1931 — November 29, 2022

Orem, UT

Luzon Bringhurst Glines, 91, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, November 29, 2022. She was born on the 4th of July 1931 in Toquerville, Utah, the daughter of Leo and Hilda Hall Bringhurst.

She was raised in Toquerville in the shadow of her beloved Smith’s Mesa and was educated in nearby Hurricane, Utah. She graduated from Hurricane High School and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Brigham Young University in 1953.

As independent as the day she was born, Luzon spent her teenage years and pre-college summers working at Bryce Canyon and in Zion National Park to have enough money to attend college.  She also worked to support herself while at BYU and was elated when she received an offer to teach at Page Elementary school in Provo, UT upon graduation. She taught school and tutored student teachers until her marriage to Reece L. Glines in 1955. She returned to teaching later in life and taught for seven years at Shelly Elementary while completing a master’s degree at BYU.

Luzon was blessed with creativity and worked to nurture her talents. She was a master seamstress, an accomplished vocal soloist, and an awarded artist. One of her most cherished awards was winning the Best of Show ribbon for her painting Summer Glory at the 2017 Washington County Fair. She was 86 years old at that time.

Most of Luzon’s adult years were spent raising her six children in American Fork, Utah. She was a faithful mother who taught her children to work, have faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and to be upstanding citizens.

Luzon’s life had its share of heartache and trial. She had scoliosis, which curved her back in such a way as to reduce her 6 foot stature to a mere 5 feet 6 inches.  To help correct her spine, she underwent a 13-hour surgery and there were many months of recovery before she was well again.  Later, she endured open heart surgery and spent several weeks on a respirator before regaining her health.

Above all, Luzon was a stalwart disciple who loved the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  One constant in her life was her abiding testimony, “I know that God lives, and that Jesus is the Christ.  He lived and died for us that we might live eternally. What gratitude I feel when I realize that my body will be straight, healthy, strong, and free of pain and suffering.” Through faith she was granted two of her most fervent wishes; to be independent to the end, and to pass peacefully from this life.

Luzon is survived by all six of her children and their spouses: DeVerl and Jayne Glines, Craig and Erlene Glines Skinn, Brett and Leanne Glines, Lee and Jeralee Glines Rawlings, Bruce and Andrea Glines Summerhays, and Kendall and Tiffany Glines.  She had 19 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Eldon, sister Melva, and grandson Matthew.

Funeral services will be held at the LDS Church located at 239 East 1100 South, American Fork, Utah, on Saturday, December 10, 2022. A viewing will be held from 12:00 to 1:00 and the Funeral Services will begin at 1:30 pm.

Luzon will be interred in the Toquerville, UT cemetery on Saturday, December 17, 2022, at 12:00 p.m. A short graveside service will be held at the cemetery for friends and family in the Washington County area.
