Meaningful Gift Ideas

Janice Ellen Asay, 86 of Provo, Utah passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 7, 2021 with family at her side. For the last several years she has missed her loving husband of over sixty years, Jesse Wortham Asay, who passed away just over four years ago. They are survived by their five children, Michele Waite, Brent, Mark, Alan, and CaraLee Hacking, along with their 19 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. Janice is also survived by her two sisters Betty Snellings and Ina Llewelyn.

Janice was born August 16, 1935 in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia to Forest and Katie Sawyers Foster. She was the middle child of seven and grew up in the small town of White Sulphur Springs. At the age of 13 she was introduced to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Spring of 1949. She was an accomplished student and graduated 3rd in her class from high school in 1953. Following graduation, she left Tuckahoe Road and White Sulphur Springs behind, and boarded a train to attend and graduate from Webber College in Babson Park, Florida. While there, she met the love of her life, Jesse Asay, who was there from Utah attending flight school in the United States Air Force. After a short courtship they were engaged. Following their engagement, Janice went back to work for the Department of the Navy at the Pentagon in Washington D.C. and Jesse began his jet training in the Lockheed T-33 at Webb Air Force Base in Big Spring, Texas.  After earning his wings, they both drove back to Utah where they were married for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple on November 6, 1956. Soon thereafter they started their family.

Throughout their marriage Janice and Jesse moved over 15 times, so you could say that the Janice became an expert at moving. Even though they moved a lot, Janice was able to make each new house a home, with her excellent eye and skills for decorating.

Janice thoroughly enjoyed being at home and spent nearly 35 years raising their five children where she touched each of their lives through countless acts of service, as only a loving mother can. Janice was a wizard in the kitchen and loved to cook amazing meals and desserts for her family (all from scratch).  If you were in her kitchen, and lucky enough, you would find a homemade cookie in the Tupperware container on the second shelf of her kitchen cupboard. She truly was an amazing cook.

Janice loved to read and had beautiful handwriting. In the 1980’s, for nearly six years, Janice applied her love of reading and got a job at the ZCMI department store located in Orem, Utah. While there, she served the many customers that came through as she managed the Book Department. With the money she earned, she bought herself a Ford Tempo that she drove to and from work with great pride.

Janice willingly served in various capacities in the LDS Church. She served as a stake missionary, primary president, relief society president and her favorite and most rewarding calling over the years was that of serving as a visiting and home teacher with her husband in the later years of their lives. Janice and Jesse both loved the missionary work of the church and were proud that a total of 12 fulltime missions had been served between their children and grandchildren, with many more to come in future generations.

A memorial service will be held Monday, September 13, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. in the LDS Lindon 10th Ward Relief Society Room located at 1051 East 200 South in Lindon, Utah. A viewing for family and friends will be held one half hour prior to the services at 10:00 a.m.  Interment will be in the Orem City Cemetery. The Asay family wishes to express their appreciation for the outpouring of love, support, and service that has been rendered by the many individuals who cared for Janice, especially those from the Yarrow Hospice, Aspen Senior Care, and Legacy Village of Provo. The family will be forever in debt to the love and care that Rosetta Hatch freely gave to Janice over the last number of years.
