Harvey Simons

March 9, 1943 — April 19, 2022

Provo, Utah

Harvey Lorenzo Simons returned to the loving arms of our Father in Heaven on April 19, 2022, surrounded by his family. He died from complications following surgery.

Harvey was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on March 9, 1943, to Harold Earl Simons and Fredda Mable Olson Simons. Harvey was the youngest of 10 children, 6 boys and 4 girls. The age gap between the children was large enough that Harvey had several siblings who were old enough to be his parents and took care of him as such. His siblings greatly adored their baby brother and would take him along on their fun adventures to Lagoon, Saltair, hunting and other places. Harvey cherished his childhood memories with his family.

He attended Granite High School and graduated in 1961 and then studied accounting at LDS Business College. While attending Granite High School, he met his high school sweetheart, Gloria Hakala. They were married July 22, 1962, and were later sealed in the Provo, Utah temple. They enjoyed boating with the family, attending events at Tuacahn and breakfast once a month with their Studebaker friends. They had a sweet loving relationship and were sweethearts for nearly sixty years. She is his greatest love. Gloria is looking forward to an eternal life with her sweetheart.

Harvey and Gloria have four daughters and one son who passed away at birth. Harvey was a devoted and loving father who loved supporting his children and grandchildren in all their activities, making time to be present at all their events. He doted on his girls; he would do anything for them. He always made sure that they never went without, providing them with many opportunities. His daughters say he loved having fun with them. They appreciated all the fun memorable family vacations and water-skiing adventures. His girls always sought out his advice, knowledge, wisdom and used him as a sounding board and confidant. He was the best listener and helped in any way he could. They will miss him deeply.

Being a hard worker was one of Harvey’s attributes. He had several jobs in his lifetime, sometimes more than one concurrently. He enjoyed working as Store Director at Smith's grocery store and as a route salesman for Dolly Madison. One could often find him whistling while he worked. He developed great relationships with all those he worked with, everyone loved seeing Harvey making deliveries.

One of Harvey’s loves was working on cars, especially Studebakers. He bought and restored many cars and trucks. He loved sharing his knowledge of Studebakers and amazed his family with how he could identify any car driving down the road or in the movies. Many family vacations were taken traveling the country attending Studebaker events and other car shows. He was one of the founding organizers of the Wasatch Mountain Studebakers Drivers Club in Utah and served in many positions, including president.

Harvey was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and had a strong testimony of our Savior Jesus Christ. He emulated the example of our Savior through his acceptance, forgiveness, care, and love for those around him. He faithfully served in many callings throughout his life, including financial clerk in several bishoprics and assisted his wife in the Sunbeam class where he patiently and kindly helped teach the three year olds about our Savior and His gospel.

Harvey was preceded in death by both parents; his siblings; his daughter Sherry; his infant son; and his son-in-law Mick.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria; daughters: Karen Cox, Rebecca (Russell) Gridley, Cindi Jensen; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
