Derae Broderick

September 13, 1931 — June 4, 2019

DeRae Broderick, age 87, passed away peacefully on June 4th, 2019, at his home in Orem, Utah. He was born September 13, 1931, in Roosevelt, Utah and was the eighth child of Hillard Ruben Broderick and Sarah Louise Ruesch. His mother died when he was 2 years old and his father later married Crystal Hill.  Hillard and Crystal had eleven children giving DeRae a total of 9 brothers and 9 sisters. His dad died when he was 17 years old. With both of his parents gone at such a young age, DeRae relied on his older siblings for support and guidance.

After graduating from Roosevelt High School, DeRae went on to Carbon College where he played football and graduated with a certificate in construction and carpentry. Shortly after graduation, he was drafted into the Army and served in Korea for 2 years.  After his military service, DeRae decided to serve a two year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was called to the Central Atlantic States Mission.

DeRae married his closest companion, Pauline Sharp, on January 31, 1958, in the Salt Lake City temple. They have 6 children, 30 grandchildren, and 31 great-grandchildren. More than anything else, he enjoyed having his family around him.  DeRae was also a lifetime sports fan and BYU Cougar Club member. He loved watching sports! He seldom missed any sporting events that his children and grandchildren participated in. Attending sporting events and watching sports on TV was one of his favorite activities.

Throughout his life DeRae was a hard and innovative worker. In 1964, he and Pauline were called to serve a building mission for the Church to Leeds, England. With four young children, a home building business, and their own home under construction, they boarded it up  and moved overseas for 2 years. DeRae recently referred to their building mission in England as one of the greatest experiences of his life.

Once they were back home in Orem, DeRae completed building his own family home and began to rebuild his career. He partnered with his former mission companion and lifelong friend, Leland Howell.  Together they established a successful general contracting business and over the next 30 years constructed 130 church buildings and many other structures. He was a highly respected business associate, leader, family man, and friend.DeRae was faithful and dedicated in many church callings throughout his life.  Of particular mention he served as a Scoutmaster for Troop 427 and positively mentored and influenced a number of young men. He helped 25 of them to earn the rank of Eagle Scout.  He also served for many years in his community including as a board member of the Scera Theater.

In 1998, DeRae and Pauline served another mission in Carlsbad, CA, where they ministered and created many deep & meaningful relationships.

DeRae  Broderick was a humble, gentle and kind man.  He was friendly, loved others, and had the ability to draw people to him. He developed and maintained a strong commitment to the gospel of Jesus Christ and a deep, abiding love of the Lord.

DeRae is survived by his wife, Pauline, his 6 children: Cindy (Kent), Gary (Becky), Chad, Phil (Joni), Kevin (Sherie), Ann; siblings: Luelma (Ken), Joyce (sister-in-law), Dawn (Vernon), Elva (Dave), Tom (Karma), Roy (Charlotte), Carol (Garland), Ruby (Ken), Mae, Heidi, Marilyn.
