David Barney

November 29, 1947 — December 6, 2021

Orem, Utah

David Lavern Barney, of Orem, Utah, passed away on Monday, December 6, 2021, peacefully in his home, with his sweetheart by his side, after battling pancreatic cancer for the past year.

He was born in 1947 in Provo, Utah to Melvin and Sarah Barney. He was married for time and all eternity to Patricia Jo Hugentobler, on November 16, 1978, in the Provo LDS Temple.

As a young man, Dave graduated from Spanish Fork High School and was called to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in the North Argentine Mission. However, he was unable to serve his mission, as he was drafted into the United States Army. He was stationed in Bromberg, Germany.

Upon his return home he was married to Irene Burtenshaw. They had 3 children (Rachelle, Beau & Farrah) before later divorcing. During this time he started working as a disc jockey at a radio station and loved his job. He had a smooth, deep voice, that will be remembered by many.

Patty and Dave were set up on a blind date and quickly fell in love. They have 5 children together and raised their family in Orem, Utah. He took pride in his home which they built together. Much of the work was done by his own hands. Dave and Patty made sure to have a home where all the kids and grandkids enjoyed visiting and spending time together. He eventually built his own cabinet shop in the backyard where he loved teaching his kids and grandkids. He became very skilled in cabinetry and loved to build things for his friends and family. If you ever gave him an idea of something you wanted built, he would often have it done for you the very next day.

Dave was a quiet server and friend to all he met. He loved making people feel welcome in his home. His children’s friends and spouses have a special relationship with Dave as they were always welcomed and treated as if they were one of his own. He was always on the move and loved to be coaching or watching his kids play sports. He was a dedicated father who did everything he could to be at his children’s sporting events or activities.

Dave was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His testimony and love of the gospel has been an example to his family and so many others. He had many callings including serving as a bishop and in multiple bishoprics. Prior to his illness, he reluctantly shaved his mustache, and dedicated his time to serve in the Provo temple, which he and Patty loved doing together. His family is comforted knowing they will see him again and he will be their guardian angel.

Dave is survived by his wife, Patty, his siblings Ted Barney and Lorraine Jensen and his children, Rachelle (Scott ) Lumpp, Beau (Brittany) Barney, Farrah (Todd) Smilanich, Chad (LynDee) Barney, Michael Barney, Kristie (Jake) Denning, Trent (Kailey) Barney, and Travis (Megan) Barney. He’s also survived by his 25 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin Barney and Sarah Clawson, and his siblings LaVaughn Gray, Arlene Jackson, Helen Ingalsbe, Ray Barney, Benny Barney, and his granddaughters Ashlyn Barney and Ella Denning.
