Listen to Obituary

Velma Ruth Haggerty, age 85, of Orem, Utah, passed away on Tuesday, January 6th, 2026, with her daughter by her side.

She was born May 31st, 1940, in Grand Junction, Colorado, and was the oldest of seven children. She married Glen Dale Haggerty on April 21st, 1961. They were married for 53 years before his passing and had two children.

Her main focus was taking care of her family, doing so with lots of love and patience. She had taken some administrative classes at Utah Technical College to improve her education. She worked for the Foster Grandparent Program at Westmore Elementary in Orem as a volunteer classroom aide for special needs children. She had also served for a time in the office at Rock Canyon Assembly of God in Provo, of which she had been a member for many years. She grew up in Utah County, and her family was one of the pioneers in establishing the Assembly of God church in the Provo area. She was a member of the Genesis Project Provo, a non-denominational Christian church, devoted to helping our homeless population, since it was established here in 2014.

Velma was known for her unwavering faith, love, and trust in the Lord and as a "Prayer Warrior". She prayed every day, in good times and bad. She would always say, "It's in God's hands," even as she was facing daunting health problems and life in general, and always reminded us that God is in control. She was taught from a young age to look for the silver lining. She was an avid reader and read her Bible every day. She enjoyed reading her Harlequin inspirational suspense books and enjoyed making doodles of cabins and outdoor scenes. She was always a sweet, loving, and kind person. She was truly the definition of a Godly woman. She will be dearly missed by her family, friends, and all who knew her.

She is survived by her son, Dale Haggerty and daughter, Vicki (Daniel) Clements both of Provo, Utah; five grandchildren, five great grandchildren and one great great grandchild; three sisters, Lillian (Thurman) McCloud of Wendover, Utah; Donna Brayton of Orem, Utah; Norma Harper of Mountain Home, Idaho and one brother, Paul (Deann) Brayton of Gig Harbor, Washington along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Glen, her parents, Stanley and Ruby Brayton, her sister Martha Matthews, and one baby sister, Vera Brayton.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Wheeler & Sundberg Funeral Home, 495 S State Street, Orem, Utah, with a viewing held that morning from 9:30-10:30 a.m. before the service at the same location.
