Steven Ralph Kellogg, 82, passed away peacefully at his home in Orem, Utah. On the morning of Tuesday, July 15, 2025, surrounded by his wife and several family members.
Steve was born in Los Angeles, California on February 13, 1943. He spent his early childhood in Los Angeles. His childhood family relocated to Barstow, California when Steve was a young teenager and he spent the remainder of his teenage years in Barstow. Living in the high desert is where Steve developed his love for the outdoors. He would take hikes all around the desert mountains with his brothers as his favorite pastime.
He was also raised as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. When he was 19, Steve followed his brother Dennis to Provo, Utah to attend college at Brigham Young University. While attending school, Steve felt inspired to serve a mission. He was called to serve for the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the eastern states mission. After honorably returning from his mission, Steve continued his education at BYU.
Shortly thereafter he met a young woman from Germany who would become not only his future wife but the person Steve would dedicate the rest of his life to as a husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Her name was Inge and after courting her, Steve asked for her hand in marriage. She said yes and they were married shortly afterwards in the Manti Utah temple, on May 25, 1968. Not long after they were married. Inge and Steve were blessed to become new parents to their first child.
Once Steve found out he was going to be a father, he left college and began his journey as a miner for the next 30 plus years. Mining a variety of different minerals and precious metals in states like Colorado and Arizona, but primarily in Utah. After the young couple had their first child they would go on to have many more children. 14 in total. 6 biological and 8 adopted children. With that many children to take care of over the years. Steve relied heavily on his faith.
He was a devoted member of his church and held many callings over the decades of his membership. He loved the gospel and working in the temple regularly.
His life had many highs and lows over the years. However, his favorite way to find balance and exercise was to spend time in the outdoors. He was an exceptional hiker and mountaineer. He would be humble about his mountaineering accomplishments but he hiked several of the tallest mountains in the lower 48 states. His crowning accomplishment was ascending to the top of Mount Whitney in California. He also had a yearly personal challenge where he would run from his home in Orem, Utah. Up the face of Mount Timpanogos and back in 10 hours or less. He was a unique, strong, devoted man of honor and faith. He will be truly missed.
