Sidney Headman

October 9, 1925 — April 13, 2018

Sidney Earl Headman, 92, passed away on April 13, 2018, at the home of Chip and Janette Headman in San Tan Valley, Arizona.  He was under the care of his loving family and Banner Hospice. Sidney was born October 9, 1925, in Belle, Missouri, to  Emmett Oliver and Rosetta Roark Headman.  At an early age, Sid moved with his family to Provo, Utah, where he grew to love the beautiful mountains. He learned the value of hard work shining shoes and selling commodities door-to-door with a man who was blind.  Sid was an accomplished athlete playing football, basketball, and baseball in his youth. He was offered a contract on two separate occasions to play professional football for the Chicago Bears.

He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1944 at the age of 18, just a few months before he would have graduated from high school.  He proudly served his country during World War II in the fifth Marine Division, Second Battalion, Fox Company. The Fox Company fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima from start to finish. Many of the men perished during this battle but the only injury Sid sustained were some facial wounds caused by shrapnel.

Sid received an honorable discharge in 1947 and gladly returned to Utah.  He received a great deal of encouragement to continue in the Marine Corp but he felt he had completed his duty and wanted to return to his home and family.  He met a beautiful young BYU Co-Ed, Betty Jayne Crawley from California, and they soon fell in love. They were married on July 28, 1948, in Glendale, California.  While living in Southern California they welcomed three children into their family; Cindy, Cris, and Sandi. Their marriage was solemnized to the St. George Temple in Utah on November 7, 1953.  Chipper joined the family before the family moved to Utah where Pam and Wendy completed the family. The family lived in Provo and Mapleton before finally settling in Orem. After being married for 69 years. Betty passed away December 28, 2017.

Sid was a “lather” by trade and worked in the construction business until his retirement at the age of 75.  He also owned and operated an acoustic ceiling business for several years. He worked on many of the commercial buildings in the Salt Lake City, Utah County, and other locations in the west.  He will be remembered as a man who worked long hours doing demanding physical work in all kinds of weather. He was a skilled craftsman who was trusted by his employers and respected by his co-workers.

Sid enjoyed working on the farm, garden, or anywhere he could put his hands in the dirt.  His rose garden in the front yard of their Orem home was a thing of beauty and satisfaction.  He enjoyed being on the water in his boat and loved to fish. His salmon fishing trips to Alaska with his brother Robert were real highlights in his life.  His passion for hunting took him on many adventures with family and friends. He loved taking his Jeep on hunting trips and taking family members on Jeep rides.  Perhaps his greatest love was camping with his family. Annual trips to Yellowstone and Arches have created lasting memories for his children and grandchildren. For their 50th wedding anniversary Sid and Betty did not want to have a fancy reception but chose instead to have their children and grandchildren gather at Pine Lake near Bryce Canyon for several days of camping, games, food and celebration.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings.  He particularly loved serving as the Ward Executive Secretary where he worked closely with several bishops and the youth of the ward for many years.  He also enjoyed serving as a temple ordinance worker in the Timpanogos Temple.

Sidney was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Betty Jayne; granddaughter Tiffany Ann Hurley; one sister; Earlene Frances Foster; three brothers; Fayl Arnold Headman, Clifford Norvel Headman, and Emmett Edward Headman.

Sidney is survived by his children: Cindy Schauerhamer (Dean) Spanish Fork, UT; Cris Hurley (Randy) Idaho Falls, ID; Sandi Jaussi (Richard) Idaho Falls, ID; Chip Headman (Janette), San Tan Valley, AZ; Pam Staich, Highland UT, Wendy Davis, Washington, UT, sisters, Minnie Marie Johnson, Provo, UT;  Mary Kathleen Blue, Aubrey, Texas; brothers Charles Le Roy (Diane), American Fork, UT; Robert Allen (Patricia), Mapleton, UT.
