Patti Louise Covey Edwards passed away on February 13, 2026. She was born an only child to Irwin and Louise Hodges Covey in Logan, Utah, on March 18, 1932. She was raised in Big Piney, Wyoming, which meant the world to her. People, blue skies, windswept landscapes, and ranch and rodeo culture pulsed strongly within her soul.
She met and fell in love with her future husband, LaVell, at Utah State University while he was playing football. After a bumpy start—she mistakenly introduced him to her friends as LaDell Anderson—things blossomed into marriage on July 24, 1952. She initially hated football and deftly navigated their courtship without ever having watched LaVell play. She admitted this to LaVell on their honeymoon. She “repented.” Her disdain for football grew into a genuine love for the game.
She was a renaissance woman whose mantra of “Enjoy the Now” brought both great and small opportunities in life. She was a barrel racer and a rodeo queen. She was an award-winning journalist at Provo’s Daily Herald. She wrote poems, conquered crosswords, knitted, and sewed fabulous items for friends and family. She was a humorist who enjoyed a good laugh…even at her own expense at times. She was the midnight typist for dilatory children’s reports. She was a founding member of the American Football Coaches’ Wives Association in 1989, and she later became its President in 1994-1995. She obtained a bachelor’s degree in American Studies from BYU when she was 63 years old. She was grateful to have served a mission with LaVell for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in New York City, New York. She was an effective fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Club of Utah County. Late in life, she became a Grand Master of emojis and texts. Here is a sampling of her last couple of texts: 🍕🌭🍔🎁🍟🎂 ❤️🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ 🙏❤️🙏.
Relationships meant most to her. She may have met and mingled with prophets, presidents, church leaders, foreign dignitaries, coaches, and athletes, but it was the personal and intimate relationships with Jesus Christ, her family, and her friends that meant the most to her...and also her dogs. A friend once said that in the next life, she wanted to come back as Patti’s dog. The family expresses heartfelt thanks to all who have loved and served Patti. She loved you.
Patti loved the beautiful things of the world. Flowers, art, and holiday decorations filled her home. She loved reading prose and poetry. She loved listening to her favorite crooner, Frank Sinatra. She loved watching her movies and TV shows. She loved traveling to cities old and new. She loved studying the Book of Mormon, which she read every night.
She is predeceased by her parents, Irwin and Louise Covey, and her eternal husband, LaVell Edwards. She is survived by daughter Ann Edwards Cannon (Ken); son John Covey Edwards (Becky), and son James LaVell Edwards (Lorri). She is also survived by 14 grandchildren (Philip Edwards Cannon, Alec Edwards Cannon, Dylan Edwards Cannon, Geoffrey Edwards Cannon, and Quinton Edwards Covey Cannon; Andrea Price Edwards, Matthew Price Edwards, Sarah Price Jensen, and Jayne Price Edwards; Kelli Austin Edwards Woodard, Adam Clark Edwards, Nicholas Clark Edwards, William Clark Edwards, and Thomas James Edwards) and 28 great-grandchildren.
Patti Louise Covey Edwards loved life, and she lived a remarkable one.
