Mindy Lee Broderick Walsh, age 71, passed away on September 28, 2024, due to cancer, leaving behind a profound legacy of love and devotion to her family and the gospel of Jesus Christ. Cherished by her loved ones, Mindy was the heart of that family with her vibrant spirit and unwavering faith.
Mindy was born on a crisp winter morning, December 3, 1952, the first child of GenaVee Steele Broderick and Lee R Broderick. She was the oldest of nine children.
Mindy loved growing up living next door to her grandma and grandpa, who lovingly called her "Mincy" as she ran in and out of their home as freely as her own.
She grew up running the hills on the south bench of Orem, and playing with the cousins on Grandma's front lawn.
She learned at a young age to work hard. One day, when she was still very young, she said to her mother, "Mama, it is kind of fun to work when you get onto it!" She picked fruit in the surrounding family orchards to earn money for her school clothes.
A neighbor lady, noticing how young Mindy passed her house every morning to catch the school bus, commented "she struts off to the school bus like she's going to set the world on fire," and she did!
As a teenager, she was accomplished on the flute, piano and baton twirling, loving to march with the exhilarating and famous Orem High School Marching Band and graduated from Orem High School as an honor student.
Mindy excelled academically in school, earning many awards, was popular, and always determined to try everything and give it her best.
She attended BYU before being called to serve a mission in Nagoya, Japan from 1974-75. She taught the gospel, mastered the difficult Japanese language, appreciated their culture and learned to make delicious Japanese food, teaching cooking classes upon her return.
After serving a successful mission she enrolled again at BYU. At her first class back, a handsome young man, by the name of Victor Walsh, from Akron, Ohio, sat down beside her. He had on a beautiful Japanese silk tie, which Mindy immediately commented on and discovered that he also served a mission to Japan. This connection started their sweet courtship. While Vic returned to Ohio to work after his graduation, their courtship continued with correspondence and phone calls.
Mindy graduated from BYU in Elementary Education and accepted a teaching assignment in Alpine School District. Mindy taught elementary school in Lindon for several years and was a much-requested teacher and became a mentor to her sisters, mother and sons who later became teachers, following in her footsteps.
Vic returned to Utah to propose to Mindy and they were married on August 7, 1980, in the Salt Lake Temple. They made their first home in Copley, Ohio. She taught in a variety of schools in Ohio including a Catholic school. She enjoyed being close to Vic's family and exploring the Amish countryside.
In a few years Mindy and Vic decided to return to Utah where Mindy continued teaching school in Pleasant Grove.
After many years, she finally received the wish of her heart and became the mother of Andrew and Thomas. She was a most devoted mother in nurturing her loved ones and her boys were her light and purpose. While her sons were growing up she served as PTA president and always had Andrew and Thomas in many activities, including cross country, track, plays, musicals, art, dance, piano, and sculpture lessons. She had the wonderful joy of recently becoming a grandmother on April 29, 2024.
Mindy was at the center of the family and with her legendary holiday parties including her Halloween extravaganzas, spiritual Christmas musical firesides, and epic New Year's Eve parties, always keeping the family closely knit and connected. She excelled at decorating, making costumes for all the family, especially for Andrew's many musical performances. She masterfully created and sewed hundreds of costumes for musicals, plays, pioneer treks, and other events. She loved being a mother. She did everything for her children, who were her greatest joy.
Mindy was an avid BYU fan. She was constantly figuring out what channel the game was on, and clipping newspaper articles of anything related to BYU. She loved to read the newspaper.
Mindy was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving valiantly wherever called in multiple positions from an early age. Choir practice was held at her home every Sunday for over 20 years.
Mindy is survived by her husband Victor John Walsh, the love of her life. Her sons Andrew Jonathan Walsh, Thomas Broderick Walsh, and wife Katie and Liam Broderick Walsh (Mindy's first grandson). Mindy is preceded in death by her father, Lee R Broderick. She is also survived by her mother, GenaVee Steele Broderick, her eight younger siblings Julene (Scot), Bruce, Denise (Dwight), Van (Sarah), Lisa (Sid), Kimball (Penny), Lana (Roger), and Karen (Alan).
She never left her mother's home without a kiss on the cheek and a double toot on the car horn as she left the driveway.
