Maynard Lamar Nielsen, 83, of Saint George, UT, passed away, Tuesday, December 26, 2023. He was born January 1, 1940 in Los Angeles, CA to Leland Oscar and Francis “Eva” Mellor Nielsen. He married his sweetheart, Ester “LaOne” Beckwith, on July 17, 1959.
Maynard was known for being a Jack of all trades. He could do almost anything and held many different positions. He had the opportunity to travel the world as a C-5 Flight Engineer with the USAF Reserves, and served in the US Air Force Air National Guard for 20 years as an Avionics Integrated Systems Mechanic. He had a love for planes, flying and the great outdoors. He enjoyed hiking, fishing, camping, and photographing scenery, especially mountains. Those who knew Maynard loved him and described him as being kind, gentle, smart, and honest. He was always willing to help others. He was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and dedicated his life to serving in various callings, including Bishop, Ward Presidency, and over 20 years in scouting. He was a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He loved his family unconditionally.
Maynard is proceeded in death by his wife, LaOne, October 25, 2014; his parents, Leland and Eva; his brothers, Darrell and Rudy; and his sister, Leanna. He is survived by his four children: Eric (Elia) of Salt Lake City, UT; Aaron (Deanna) of Phoenix, AZ; Scott of Saint George, UT; Mayla (Paul) Goodin of Saint George, UT. His sister Fae (Clyde) Naylor of Orem, UT; brothers Elliott (Ann) of Salem, UT; Roger (Sandra) of South Jordan, UT. Eleven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Our family gives heartfelt thanks to Southgate Senior Living of Saint George, UT, for their loving care and attention this last year and to Enhabit Hospice Care for their help and kindness this last month.
A viewing will be held Saturday, January 6, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., with the funeral to follow at 11:00 a.m. at the Sundberg-Olpin & Wheeler Funeral Home. 495 South State Street, Orem, Utah. Interment will be held at the East Lawn Memorial Cemetery with military rites by the American Legion. 4800 North 650 East Provo, Utah
