Keith Howard Mason (Mr. BYU), age 89, of Provo, Utah, passed away on January 4, 2026. He resided in Provo most of his life, having been born there on May 18, 1936. During his younger years, Keith was fiercely loyal and loving to his parents, Howard and Mary Mason, as well as to his brothers, Dean and Wayne Mason.
Keith was a devoted and loving husband to the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Loreli Howells Mason. Together, they created a beautiful family that included three children: Michele, Merilee, and Mark.
A hard-working and diligent individual, Keith continuously proved himself to be a dependable employee throughout his youth. His many jobs included farm assistant, cashier and stock boy, florist, and—one he was especially remembered for—bowling alley attendant. He was always appreciated for his dependability and passion in anything he put his mind to.
In 1954, at the age of 18, Keith experienced a pivotal year in his life. He married his soulmate (Miss Orem) and joined the United States Army, where he served during the Korean War. Despite his enlistment, he went on to graduate from Brigham Young University in 1959 at the top of his class with honors.
Keith had many hobbies and interests that truly defined who he was. He was affectionately nicknamed and known by many as “Mr. BYU.” He was recently honored on November 29, 2025, as part of the BYU Chain Gang for working 53 years and for not missing a game in over 62 years. While football was his favorite sport, he also loved baseball, golf, and basketball.
Despite his many job titles and responsibilities, Keith always made time for his family and passions in life. He will be honored and remembered as a man of integrity, kindness, and generosity, who left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
Keith is survived by his children Michele (Las Vegas), Merilee (Provo), and Mark (San Diego); eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many friends and extended family members who will miss him dearly.
Keith Mason was preceded in death by his wife Loreli Howells Mason, his parents Howard and Mary Mason, and his two brothers Dean and Wayne Mason.
A viewing service will be held on Tuesday, January 13, from 6:30–8:30 p.m. at Wheeler-Sundberg Funeral Home, 495 S. State Street, Orem, Utah. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 14, at 11:00 a.m. at the church building located at 1122 Grand Avenue, Provo, Utah.
