John Jones

November 20, 1925 — August 29, 2022

Orem, Utah

Jack N. Jones, 96, beloved father, grandfather, and great grandfather, died on August 29, 2022 in Orem, Ut.  He was able to live in his own house until the morning of his passing.  Jack was born in Eureka, UT on November 20, 1925, to George N. & Lula Oakey Jones.  He was the 3rd child in his family, with brothers Ted Jones and Rex Jones, sisters Thelma (Carter) and Audrey (Carter), all preceding him in death.  Jack grew up in Springville, Ut, and graduated from Springville High School, and was very active in athletics, playing baseball and basketball.  Later coaching the sophomore basketball team at Springville.  Jack enlisted in the US Army in 1943 serving in WWII.  He served with valor as a paratrooper.  Jack married Mable Ann Simons in 1950 and was later divorced; and married Beverly June McAbier in 1957 with their marriage solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple in 1962.  Jack was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.  His love of God was evident as he served in many Ward callings, as a temple worker for 10 years in the Provo Temple, and as a service worker in the Bishop's Storehouse.

Jack was employed by Thorn Construction Company for over 20 years, working in various jobs of labor, operating equipment, and company management.  In 1974 Jack was employed as the Director of Public Works for the City of Orem, working there until his retirement in 1991.  He had a great love for Orem, having served on the City Council in the late 1960's and he promoted the growth of city parks and recreation areas throughout his life.  Jack had a tremendous work ethic, and enjoyed working in his yard.  Mowing his large lawn until recently when he finally agreed to hire a landscape service.  Jack was an avid pheasant hunter throughout his life and taught all of his sons how to hunt and dress pheasants.  In his retirement years Jack remained active playing golf almost every week.  Playing for many years with his ‘golf buddies’ at Cascade Fairways until it closed, then at Sleepy Ridge in Orem.  Jack was a dedicated runner for decades and truly loved his solitary runs, often logging 35 miles weekly when in his 70's and was still walking 20 miles weekly into his 90's.  Jack subscribed to the newspaper and read it every day, even as the written news became much harder to find in recent years.  He was an avid BYU and Utah Jazz fan to the very end.

Jack is survived by children, Linda Skelton of Pleasant Grove, UT; Debbie Gren, of Pleasant Grove, UT; James Jones (Dixie) of Payson, UT; Randy Jones (Kathy) of Salem, UT ; Terry Jones (Janette) of Camas, WA; Brent Jones (Janine) of Sandy, UT; and Allison Sundberg (Jan) of Sandy, UT.  His son David Grant Jones died at age 6.

A visitation for family and friends of Jack will be held on Tuesday, September 6, 2022 from 6-8pm at Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary, 495 S. State Street in Orem.  Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 7, 2022 at 11am at the LDS Chapel 1260 S. 400 W., Orem, UT.  A viewing will be held that morning from 9:30-10:30am prior to the services at the church.  Burial will be in the Springville Evergreen Cemetery.
