Harold Norman Hoyal, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on July 22, 2025, at the age of 82.
Harold was born on January 8, 1943, in Alhambra, California, to Norman Samuel and Anona Williams Hoyal. He often said he could not have had better parents. He spent his early years in Alhambra (CA), Ogden (UT), and Colton (CA).
After graduating from Ben Lomond High School in 1961, Harold went on to faithfully serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Uruguay from January 1962 to July 1964. His deep testimony and love for the gospel remained a guiding force throughout his life.
Harold earned his bachelor’s degree in Spanish and History from Weber State College in 1968 and later received a master’s degree in history and education from the University of Northern Colorado in 1974. He also pursued postgraduate studies at the University of Colorado and the University of Utah.
On August 18, 1966, Harold married the love and light of his life, Barbara Ann Peterson, in the Salt Lake City Temple. Together, they built a life centered around faith, learning, and family.
Harold dedicated his professional life to education, teaching for 8 years in the Denver School District and another 30 years in the Alpine School District. His love of books led him to work for 20 years in the ZCMI Book Department and over 8 years at Deseret Book. He also did mosquito abatement work for Utah County during the summers for more than three decades.
A devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Harold served faithfully in many callings over the years. He found great purpose in his service and studies of the gospel.
Harold was preceded in death by his beloved parents. He is survived by his wife, their four children, thirteen grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He loved his family deeply and considered them his greatest joy and accomplishment.
To those who knew him, Harold will be remembered for his dedication to faith and family. He always said the most important part of his life was being able to provide for his family—and he did so with great love and pride.
