Hal Moore

Hal G Moore, 84, died peacefully on May 4, 2014, at the home of his daughter, Alison, where he has resided the past three years. He was born August 14, 1929, in Vernal, Utah, to Lewis Henry Moore and Nora Gillman Moore. He married D'On Empey on July 20, 1956, in the Salt Lake Temple. She died in 2003. Hal graduated from South High in 1946. He served an LDS mission in the Netherlands from 1948-1951. Upon his return he completed his bachelor's degree in mathematics at the University of Utah in 1952. He taught school in Salt Lake City and at Carbon College before returning to the U, receiving his master's degree in 1957. Hal joined the faculty at Purdue in 1957. In 1961 he accepted a position in BYU's math department. In 1964 the family moved to Goleta, California, where he completed his PhD in 1967, at UC Santa Barbara. At that time he returned to BYU, living in Orem, to rejoin the math faculty. In 2005 he was given the Honorary Alumni Award at BYU. Hal was a devoted member of the LDS church, serving as a bishop (first in Lafayette, Indiana, and later in a BYU married student ward), branch president at the MTC, in the high council, and many other callings. He is survived by: three loving children, David (Denise Walton) Moore, Nora (Bret) Hess, and Alison Moore (Samuel) Smith; 17 grandkids; five great-grandchildren; siblings: Keith (Joycelyn) Moore, Thomas (Alberta) Moore, and Kathleen Winn. He was preceded in death by his parents, beloved wife, and twin granddaughters. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 9, 2014, at 10:00 am at the Lindon Utah Central Stake (56 E 600 N, Lindon). A visitation will be held one hour prior to services and also on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 pm at Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary (495 S State St, Orem). Burial will be in Orem City Cemetery.
