Erma Olsen

April 22, 1929 — July 15, 2018

We are saddened to announce the passing of our dear mother and grandmother, Erma Olsen, aged 89 of Springville, on July 15, 2018. Please join us for a viewing at 9:30 to 10:30 on Saturday, July 21, 2018 at the Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary at 495 State Street, Orem, Utah. The viewing is prior to the services at the same location starting at 11:00 am.

Erma was born to Acel and Elma Nielson, the second oldest of 7 children in Provo, Utah. She grew up in Provo, Richfield, Utah, Leesburg, Salmon, Gilroy and Kimberly Idaho, Hollister, California and Provo Bench (Orem), Utah. She was a big help to her mother who was in poor health. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1947, and then married her high school sweetheart Robert Olsen, on April 22, 1948 in the Manti Temple. Robert worked various jobs all around the Orem/Provo area. Robert and Erma subcontracted out the building of their long time residence in West Orem, finished and furnished the interior. She sanded, mudded and painted the rooms, as well as stained and varnished all of the cabinets built by her husband in the house. She was an accomplished seamstress and made curtains and most of the young children’s clothes. They also built several camping trailers and motorhomes, so they could pursue their interest in camping, fishing and touring the United States, Canada and Mexico. The high point of her year was the annual vacation that was carefully planned and budgeted. She was an excellent homemaker, cook, baker, crafter and painter. She created many oil pictures and crocheted many doilies and pillowcases. She also created many china dolls which she displayed in her home. The highlight of Thanksgiving was her rolls, pies and carrot pudding. Erma was also an avid reader with an extensive collection of novels that she would read and re-read until late at night. In August 2016 Robert and Erma moved to an assisted living facility in Springville due to ongoing health issues with herself and her husband.

Erma was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  She served in many church callings including Primary worker and Relief Society counselor, homemaking leader and visiting teacher. Erma especially loved visiting with her four children and their spouses, 10 grandchildren (plus spouses) and 32 great-grandchildren. She loved holding and rocking the babies of the family.

Erma is survived by her children, Eileen (Logan), Dale (Jean), Barbara (David) and Mark (Sandy). She is also survived by one sister, Lois (Bob) Burdett, and four brothers: James, Ray (Lila), LaVern (Mary) and Eugene (Beverly) Nielson. Erma is preceded in death by her husband, Robert, parents Acel and Elma, sister Vera Gibby, her husband Clarence and sister-in-law Glenda.

Funeral Services are at the Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary Chapel (495 State Street, Orem) at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 21, 2018. A viewing for friends and family will be 9:30 to 10:30 on July 21st at the Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary.

Interment is at Timpanogos Memorial Gardens Cemetery at 1000 North 400 East, Orem. Services are under the direction of Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary of Orem, Utah.
