Doris Kay Nelson Olpin

passed away in her home in Provo on July 27, 2026 at the age of 92 of Alzheimer’s.

Doris Kay was married to in the Salt Lake Temple on June 5, 1957,and survived by her husband David Lawrence Olpin, also 92 for 68 years.

Her parents were Milton, Ephraim Nelson PhD and Margaret Manning.

Doris Kay was a world traveler and graduate of Brigham Young University with a BA in Spanish because of living and graduating from high school in Mexico City for five years prior to residence in Provo.

Dave and Doris Kay met on a BYU genealogy bus field trip to Salt Lake, dated two years; and Dave was called to Finland as a missionary to initiate the country’s genealogy and temple work for the country while she traveled around the world to Burma to act as a secretary to her biochemist father; returned to BYU and she got her BA and “Mrs” all in the same week.

She was an astute writer and grammarian and artistically gifted. She served for 30 years in the Provo City Library as the Administrative Assistant for three directors. Her love books was self-evident with reading over 3500 recorded books. She never went to bed without a book and had a home book club for over 30 years for friends.

She enjoyingly served as a Cub Scout leader, numerous ward leadership and several stake opportunities and was Relief Society president as well as being “sister Bishop” in a BYU student ward, the MTC and the Utah State Hospital where Dave served. Her Hallmark was her loving hugs.

She had a great love of music and beautifully played the piano and was a music leader and, in a stake choral for over 30 years.

She was preceded by her first son Steven Lawrence Olpin

Doris Kay is survived by her three children, Michael Nelson Olpin WSU PhD and Shanyn Williams Olpin; Scott David Olpin, Sandpoint, Idaho, and Glen Milton, Olpin, of Murray, six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on August 11 at 11 o’clock in the at the Provo Cemetery Southwest shelter 610 S State Street SW entrance
