Listen to Obituary

Our dear Betty Marie Lewis Smith passed away peacefully on June 23, 2025, at the age of 95. A loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, and neighbor, Betty's life was filled with devotion, kindness, and a passion for the things she loved most - family, faith, friends, travel, and adventure.

Born on September 7, 1929, in Oakley, Utah, Betty was the daughter of James Lewis and Maude Johnson. Her early childhood was spent in Oakley before moving to Panguitch, and then to Beaver at the age of 11. Betty graduated from Beaver High School and, in her teenage years, worked at a variety of jobs in Beaver, including at the telephone office in Cedar City. She worked at Albertson's in Orem for 14 years and then spent another 14 years working at JCPenney.

Betty married J. Clinton Smith, on February 11, 1949, in Beaver, Utah. They were later sealed in the Mount Timpanogos Temple on June 7, 2002. Betty and Clinton lived most of their lives in Orem, Utah, where they built a life full of memories and lasting friendships. During their early years of marriage, they moved frequently for Clinton's work with the telephone company, from St. George to Logan. In their retirement, they enjoyed spending winters in Mexico, Arizona, and St. George.

Betty had a passion for golf, and in 1986, she proudly scored a hole-in-one. She was an avid golfer and even became the ladies' club champion at Timpanogos Golf Course. She was an avid sports fan! She loved her Utah Jazz and BYU. Betty also loved to crochet, creating beautiful afghans for her family, and had a deep love for travel - especially to Hawaii and on cruises. Betty and Clinton were part of the Rolling Phones, a camping group of telephone company retirees from Utah, Idaho, and Montana, where they made many lifelong friends while camping in their fifth-wheel trailer.

Above all, Betty cherished her family. She adored being a grandmother and took great joy in watching her great-grandchildren grow. Her warmth, wisdom, and love will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She was an amazing example to all of us of enduring to the end.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Sherry (Wendall) Holdaway; four grandchildren, Corbin (Melanie) Holdaway, Brandon (Aaron) Smith, Cameron (Stacy) Holdaway, and Devri (Zack) Orton; and 10 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Clinton; son, Steven; baby Marilyn and baby Gary; her parents; and two sisters, Mildred Hollingshead and Helen Ashworth, and her brother, Max Lewis.

The family would like to express our heartfelt gratitude for the wonderful and loving care Betty received from Dignity Hospice, especially from Renee and Naomi, and from Summit Assisted Living, with special thanks to Gentry and April. A viewing will be held Friday, June 27, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Wheeler & Sundberg Funeral Homes, 495 S State Street, Orem, Utah. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 28, at noon at the Beaver Cemetery in Beaver, Utah.
