Reed L Stone

March 22, 1922 ~ March 16, 2019 (age 96)

Reed was born March 22, 1922 to Arvil Oliver and Ruth Goodrich Stone in Vineyard, Utah County, Utah. Reed grew up where Geneva Steel once stood. He is the 2nd of six children. He married Mable Jane Moulton of Delta, Utah in the Salt Lake City Church of Jesus Christ temple on June 1, 1942.

Reed loved the great out of doors. He enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, travel and birding with family and friends. He also enjoyed helping people, building and repairing things.  Reed was quite a gardener and shared the produce with neighbors and friends.

After graduating from Lincoln High in Orem he followed his interest in carpentry by attending a carpentry class in night school. He apprenticed at Hill Field building on the small arms plant. From there he went to Tri State Lumber Co. in Provo as a box maker, from there he worked as a cabinet maker for Spear Lumber Co. also in Provo where he became a master cabinet maker. He also became a journeyman carpenter, a machinist, and was proficient at electric and gas welding. Reed was also proficient in copper art and wood carving.

While working he followed a lifetime passion for flying under the tutelage of Merrill Christopherson and eventually earned his Private Pilot license.

Reed did his tour of duty in the Army Air Force during WW 2.  Most of his time as an instrument flying instructor for pilots. He earned his bachelors degree in industrial education at Utah State University, a Masters degree at BYU. He continued his studies throughout his profession as a teacher earning the equivalent of a triple major; industrial arts, building construction and guidance counseling. He taught a total of thirty eight years in Utah and California.

Because of the move to California Reed found it necessary to go into business in order to have a retirement.  At one time he, his wife and partners operated five businesses while teaching full time.

Reed loved people, particularly the youth. He claimed teaching was never work. He was a scout leader 26 years, served as a high counselor for 24 years under five different stake presidents, answered the call to be bishop twice, served as ordinance worker at the Provo temple 3+ years, Stake executive secretary and many other callings.

Reed left this mortal life March 16, 2019.
