James (Jim) Harmon

May 27, 1943 ~ September 13, 2019 (age 76)

Jim Harmon, 76, of Orem, passed away on Friday, September 13, 2019, after enduring the effects of Parkinson’s disease for decades. He was born in Brigham City, Utah, on 27 May 1943, the son of Cameron Kay Harmon and Elizabeth Christensen.

He graduated from Box Elder High School in 1961, then served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the California Los Angeles Mission. He graduated Magna Cum Laude as Valedictorian from the College of Electrical Engineering from Utah State University, then from Stanford University with a Master’s Degree of Science. His career with Hewlett-Packard was challenging and rewarding, first working at the Stanford Park Division building signal generators, then moving to marketing to become a service engineer, his true passion. He transferred to the Spokane Washington Division, riding his bike 11 miles to and from the office. Hewlett-Packard holds two patents in his name.

Jim developed a passion for life-long learning. He studied Greek and Hebrew and became adept at reading original texts. He learned to play the recorder, to build cabinets, and to digitize and archive thousands of slides and family photos. He was a faithful home teacher. He loved to sing, participating in the California Bach Society, then in the Spokane Symphony Chorale. He traveled the world, his favorite memories being from his experiences in Israel, Norway, Rio de Janiero, Greece and Antarctica.

The family wishes to express deep appreciation for the professional and compassionate care provided to Jim by Norma and her associates at Alpha Hospice, Osmond Assisted Living, and Orchard Park. Jim is survived by Janet Beecher, his wife of 55 years, his three daughters, Allison (Joseph) McCord, Carol (Adam) Anderegg and Barbara (Tim) Short, his sister Betsy (Robert) Ford and his nine grandchildren. Jim will be interred in the Brigham City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the humanitarian fund for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
