David Harry Miles

April 19, 1928 ~ July 19, 2018 (age 90)

David Harry Miles, 90, of Provo, passed away on Thursday, July 19, 2018. He was born April 19, 1928 in Price, Utah to Francis Marion Miles and Nettie Potter. He married Mary Louisa Wilson on November 26, 1952 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.

David was the youngest of four children.  He grew up in Price and graduated from Carbon High School in 1947.  He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Northern California Mission in 1948-50.  He graduated from Carbon College (now the College of Eastern Utah) in 1951 and from Brigham Young University in 1953.  He met his wife, Mary, at BYU.  Following his graduation there, the couple went to Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa where he earned a Ph. D. in organic chemistry in 1957, then he spent an extra year there as a post-doctoral fellow.  While in Iowa, he and his wife adopted two children: Gordon Lee and Loa Rae.  The couple then moved to Corpus Christi, Texas for two years where David worked as a research chemist.  There they adopted Lorein, Stephen Lynn, Linda, Armando, and Elsa.  The family moved to Laie, Hawaii where David was employed as a professor for many years at The Church College of Hawaii (now BYU-Hawaii).  In Hawaii, the couple adopted Baldemar, Mary Ellen, Gilbert, and Estella.  All eleven children have been sealed to their parents for eternity in a temple of the Lord.

David was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout his life.  He served as a bishop, stake secretary, stake executive secretary and in other positions including as a temple ordinance worker and sealer.  After retirement, David and his wife moved to Orem, Utah and then later to Provo, Utah.  David served in the Timpanogas and Provo Temples.  As a couple, David and his wife served as missionaries in the Mexico Monterrey Mission, the Honduras Tegucigalpa Mission, the California Monterey Mission, the Family History Mission in Salt Lake City, and at the Santo Domingo Temple in the Dominican Republic.  As his life came to its close, he wanted  his family and each of his friends to know that he loved and appreciated them for their contributions to his life. He was known for his love of sports and especially, for his loyalty to the BYU Cougars!

David is survived by his ten children: Baldemar (Darlene) Miles, Mary Ellen Boyer-Sharer, Gilbert (Linda) Miles, Estella Miles, Lorein Miles, Armando Miles, Elsa Miles, Loa Rae (James) Simoes, Stephen Lynn (Tara) Miles, and Linda Spencer. He is preceded in death by his son, Gordon Lee Miles and by his two sisters, Jean Miles Westwood and Shirley Miles Farqhuar.  He is survived by 25 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren and by his brother, John Kenneth Miles.
