Frank Austin Cope

Frank Austin Cope Frank Austin Cope died April 23, 2012 in Orem, Utah at the age of 88. He was born Aug. 4, 1923 in Richfield, Utah, the seventh of eight children born to George M. Cope and Geneva Cox. When he was two years old, his mother died and his father married Eunice Wilson, who raised him after his father's death when Frank was three. Frank grew up in Richfield, graduating from Richfield High School where he ran track and played football. He was an excellent student and was valedictorian of his class. He enlisted in the Army during WWII and spent 10 months in Guam. After the war he stayed in the Army Reserves and retired many years later as a Colonel. Frank graduated as a pharmacist from the University of Utah. Always an excellent swimmer, he was on the U of U varsity swimming team. He married Janice Olson on Aug. 3, 1950 in the Logan Temple and they were blessed with six children. In 1956 the family moved from Salt Lake to Orem when Frank took a position at Geneva Steel. He was a foreman at the Coke plant, worked part time as a pharmacist and served in the Army Reserves. After 28 years he retired from Geneva Steel and began working full time as a pharmacist at Allen's Pharmacy in Provo, retiring at the age of 86. Frank was interested in history and liked to read. He loved golfing and swimming and he worked to stay fit and healthy. He enjoyed time spent with his family and was a fun 'Grandpa Frank' to his 18 grandchildren taking them swimming, hiking and out to dinner. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many positions throughout his life. He especially enjoyed teaching Gospel Doctrine in his later years. He was a loving father and grandfather, supporting his posterity in many ways, including financial support to grandchildren serving missions. Frank was preceded in death by his wife Janice, sister Melba Hoyt and brothers George, Robert, Keith and Edward. He is survived by his six children: Alana (Andrew) Eaton, Mary (Steven) Nelson, Robert (Tammy) Cope, Raymond (Naomi) Cope, Margaret Cope, Joanne Cope, 18 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by brothers James and Richard Cope and sister Georgia Cope Anderson. Funeral services will be held Sat. April 28 at 1 pm at the Sharon Park 3rd Ward, 225 E. 200 N. in Orem. There will be a viewing at Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary Fri. night 6-8 pm and at the church Sat. from 11:30-12:30. He will be buried in the Orem Cemetery with military rites provided by American Legion Post #72. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.sundbergolpinmortuary.com
